Though the movement system is built upon the foundations from the previous installments, there are some new features as well. One of them is the ability to glide – after launching themselves into the air, Peter and Miles can cover long distances without needing to keep using their webs. They can use aerodynamic tunnels scattered throughout New York to do so. PlayStation detailed the game’s system requirements on PC in a trailer and accompanying blog post. In addition to features like rio66 ray tracing and ultrawide monitor support, the PC version will also allow integrated use of the PS5’s DualSense controllers.

The best thing MJ contributes to this game is when she turns into Scream. She vents her frustrations with herself and Peter in a way that shows she isn’t this perfect paragon she’s presented as the rest of the time. Lean into that and show that she’s just as flawed as the main two heroes, and more people might actually start to like her. Peter got jealous of Miles’ venom powers – sharing the name of the villain despite having no connection and never being mentioned – so he stole Doc Ock’s arms and made them his own. Even though the four metal arms are usually reserved for the Iron Spider suit.

It soon turns out to be not just an outfit, but the fan-favorite Venon symbiote and the third aforementioned villain. It has connected itself to Peter, and while it enhances his abilities, it also negatively impacts his personality, seeming to slowly take him over. Miles must find a way to help his friend while handling Kraven and the Lizard, with all of New York City’s fate at stake. Unlike its two predecessors, the game was developed entirely with the PlayStation 5 in mind. It was created by the American studio Insomniac Games – known for such series as Resistance, Ratchet & Clank and the original Spyro trilogy – since 2020 part of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE).

You can enjoy Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 without prior story or character knowledge, but we recommend you explore previous titles to fully experience the emerging narrative. They are evolving brawls packed full of danger that put all of your skills to the test. Dodges and parries are key, as well as using environmental tools dotted around the arenas for your benefit. One area that Insomniac has made improvements in is that Spider-Man 2 offers significantly more in the way of enemy variety, so you’ll no longer be battering the same five balaclava bullies with baseball bats.

Insomniac brought back the ability to change the super-suit you have equipped. They reduced the amount of suits Peter has, as Peter and Miles each have their own suits. There is also a variety of side characters that will pop up throughout the adventure.

You won’t want to jump in for the first time here since Spider-Man 2 builds on the first two games both in its mechanics and its story – but of course, there’s little reason not to, since those games are also excellent. Avoiding spoilers, the basic premise revolves around Kraven the Hunter, who is, well, craving a hunt. For those uninitiated in the character, he’s essentially The Predator, an Apex hunter blessed with super strength who has chosen New York as his next hunting ground. It’s a great starting point that sends the city’s hero and villain dynamic into flux as he sets his sights on the biggest prey possible. Furthermore, both characters have distinct abilities, so it feels fresh to switch them up.
